I'm just curious what everyone thinks of this movie. Do you think it will be good or even revolutionary? How well do you think it will do at the boxoffice it is coming out December 18th? Are you excited to see it?

James Cameron and half of hollywood are on crack they keep talking about how 3D (whereing glasses type) has created a new immersion unlike anything we've ever seen. The funny thing is 3D movie have been around for a very long time and every 10-15 years hollywood gets it in there mind that everything needs to be in 3D. But the technology has improved and blah blah blah blah.

1st about 10% of the population can't even see the 3D as they lack depth perception
2nd about 30-50% will get headaches from eye strain making it not enjoyable at all oh and the longer the movie the worse it will be.
3rd the difference between watching Hitchcock''s "The Birds" (1963) and Avatar in 3D may have changed leaps and bounds on the technical side but on the user side the experience is only more polished not revolutionized or completely different.

Seriously half the articles on this move proclaim crap like this

"A movie revolution will take place at the end of the year - potentially offering as big a leap in our viewing experience as the change from black-and-white television to color."

Here is an interesting little site about 3D myths: http://www.3dfilmpf.org/info-top-10-3D-myths.html

Anyways I am actually excited to see the movie just all the medias "god's gift to movies" proclamations are driving me nuts.

What do you all think about the movie?

I think I will reserve opinion untill I have actually seen the movie... and I haven´t seen any new 3D movie in an cinema so I can´t say if thats any good... what I´ve seen of the movie looks like a good action/sci-fi movie but nothing more... the media will always hype the newest thing out there so I just wouldn´t read that stuff... the hole 3d thing really won´t interest me that much until it gets interactive and is used in pornos...

I'll watch it. I still think all that hype around it is annoying, but oh well.

So I saw Avatar today and I can say that my movie going experience has not been "revolutionized." Sorry but I had to lead off with that as James Cameron has done nothing but spout this nonsense for months. To catch everyone up James Cameron (the director of Titanic, Terminator,The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens) managed to get Hollywood to give him another over the top astronomical budget to make his movie. Now he has earned the right as his movies have always made the returns. However he seems to believe that his movie will "change how we see movie forever." This revolution he speaks of is in fact 3D glasses. On the theater side he has done nothing new except make a more polished product then the others.

Now the movie its self is actually really good and as far as huge graphics blockbusters go I would rank it just below Star Wars and Lord of the Rings in terms of awesomeness. That said one problem people might have is if they expect the vast character story arcs that those films had. Without revealing to much I will tell you this is basically a Pocahontas story line. My one complaint is that I wish we had gotten to know the other characters better. Its not that they're neglected its that you really don't get to see their internal conflict (that goes from hinted at to some what exposed) developed to a satisfying level. I walked out of the theater wanting more. The movie is around 3 hours long but doesn't feel like it. Again for me I would have enjoyed another hour with the supporting cast.

The graphics, oh the graphics. Well firstly I saw the movie in 3D which although never abused and cool for a few moments stills seems as relevant as it was 50 years ago. It certainly didn't take anything away and might have added a little something but overall I just don't get it. Now as for the graphics um affraid they are awesome the best by leeps and bounds. The best compliment I can give is that I almost never even noticed that they where graphics and instead felt like I was watching something filmed on location. I do have one complaint, and that is none of the creatures have fur of any kind which is something notoriously difficult to render and time consuming. Furless makes sense for 90% of the creature but for me that 10% that wasn't there would had made them untouchable in every category when it come to CG. The level they reached are just so spectacular for CG that I am sure it will be the high water mark for many years, just not when it comes to fur.

In closing this is an excellent movie that I highly recommend. Make sure you go in not expecting to much in the story department and you will love it. You can set your CG expectations as high as you would like though as it will still blow your mind.

So 3D isn't really that big of a deal to go out and see? I'll be getting this on blu ray when it comes out, I can wait. Movie sounds really good! Smile

Meh. It's one of those movie that looks good to me, but I'm not interested to go waste money on it.

Gonna watch it when it comes on TV. Don't care for 3-d.

It was designed for 3D, and succeeds at doing it. I personally do not understand how a little depth perception adds much to a movie. There are a few scene though that I thought where note worthy but they involved a water drop and the other was ash falling through the air.

If you go to see it in theater just see it in 3D as there probably won't be much choice. The theater I went to only had 4 showings all day without the glasses (not 3d) and they must have had 30 showing.

Now if you are ever going to give 3D a chance this would be the movie to see in 3D. If you where only going to see 1 movie in theater in the next year this would be the movie I recommend you see. The visuals are beyond spectacular and the story is very engaging. Basically I don't think you can lose seeing this movie.

Again though for me 3d doesn't offer much more, maybe for other it will add even more to the awesomeness.

and Dances with Wolfs.

Here is Pocahontas's synopsis
Spoiler:
Pocahontas is the daughter of Algonquin chief Powhatan, who promises her in marriage... to Kocoum, a brave whom she doesn't love. Pocahontas would rather be paddling in her canoe or wandering in the forest, communing with nature and her animal pals, Meeko, a raccoon, and the hummingbird Flit. When European settlers arrive, she becomes enamored of handsome John Smith. Their attraction is encouraged by Grandmother Willow, a talking tree. The situation between their peoples is tense, however, as the settlers, led by Governor Ratcliffe desperately want the gold that they're sure the natives are concealing. When a dutiful sentry, Thomas follows Smith into the woods on one of his secret meetings with Pocahontas, a tragic mistake leads both groups to the brink of war. Only the love of Pocahontas and Smith can prevent bloodshed.

Here is how AVATAR its similar
Spoiler:
IN AVATAR
- The girl is the chiefs daughter, she is already set to be "married" to one of the strong warriors
- She spends a lot of time communicating with nature through spirituality or something
- A tree blossoms informer her about Jake and that he is the one eventually
- Instead of gold its some other precious metal they are mining

The main differences is the war is not triggered over "some tragic mistake" and obviously the movie is told from Jake's perspective. But all in all its the same basic story

Dances with Wolfs synopsis
Spoiler:
Having been sent to a remote outpost in the wilderness of the Dakota territory during the American Civil War, Lieutenant John Dunbar encounters, and is eventually accepted into, the local Sioux tribe. He is known as "Dances with Wolves" to them and as time passes he becomes enamoured by the beautiful "Stands With a Fist". Not soon after, the frontier becomes the frontier no more, and as the army advances on the plains, John must make a decision that will not only affect him, but also the lives of the natives he now calls his people.
