Should Nintendo invade the cellphone gaming market??? Empty Should Nintendo invade the cellphone gaming market???

With its 3DS selling much less than expected and, Nintendo’s shareholders are starting to doubt the company’s direction and asking for drastic change.

According to Stats Investment Management Co.'s Masamitsu Ohki, Nintendo should use the “war chest” of more than $10 billion (collected from the phenomenal success of Wii and DS) to buy its way into the smartphone games market.
“[smartphones] are the new battlefield for the gaming industry,” he told Bloomberg, “Nintendo should try to either buy its way into the platform or develop something totally new.”
Recent changes in Nintendo’s stock price seem to indicate that this shouldn’t be brushed off a single analyst’s personal opinion. Most evidently, Nintendo shares price jumped 4.9% up instantly after rumors spread that they are creating a Pokemon game for the iPhone. The increase was then reversed almost as quickly as it rose, after the company denied any plans to make smartphone games.
Nintendo refused to comment on the matter, leaving us with a statement issued on July 5th, when it affirmed that its strategy of developing software only for its own hardware “hasn't changed and won't change.”

So what do you think? Should Nintendo start making cellphone games? A 5% jump in their stock when there was only a rumor of a Pokemon Iphone game sounds pretty sweet... I recently heard Micheal Packter say that for the next gen of handhelds possibly up to 1/3 of game sales will shift to the cellphone market... now Nintendo doesn't have to shift their plans completely... they could either bring cheaper versions of Mario and Pokemone to the Iphone, make some cash there and possibly get people interested in getting the full experience on the 3DS... or they could buy/create new studios and use their experience in making portable games to try and dominate the mobile games market with new IPs... I think its pretty obvious that there is quite a large shift happening in the handheld market and while Nintendo should not jump on board of every trend they have to go with the time...

Should Nintendo invade the cellphone gaming market??? Pok%C3%A9mon_Say_Tap_iPod_title

Just because Nintendo is developing a Pokemon App doesn't mean the flood gates will open, or should open. Most people don't realize this, but Nintendo only owns 32% of Pokemon. (Maybe they should get that up to 50%+) Besides "Pokemon Say Tap" is just a rhythm game based of the trading card game. I think they want people to get interested in Pokemon and then move onto the 3DS.

It isn't that I don't like the idea of Nintendo developing smartphone games, but if they were to do so I would want a Nintendo smartphone! You know, one that actually has buttons. This way I can feel more comfortable when playing ROMS as well. Smile

They'll get slaughtered at the beaches... razor thin profit margins, huge competition, and that would force them to expand their company by a few thousand people unless they outsource everything to HTC or something...

So no.

I don't think they should. Nintendo should stick to what they do best, and do it even better. Expanding to new markets is something google and MS do, and typically do poorly for the first bit... eventually get better after acquiring their competition...

yeah but this time around sony seems to be more serious competition... it looks like they finally got a full on core gamer handheld right (seconds analog button) so they might be doing better and should have less to worry about casual games eating into their demographic...

the 3Ds however is in between the core and casual market so they might lose core gamers to sony and casual gamers to cellphone and Ipad games... sure they will still do good for now... but they probably won't dominate as much as with the DS... and in the long run they might have to consider branching out in new directions...

I don't think the huge competition with thin profit margin or not expand to new market arguments make that much sense... the competition is there whether they compete with them on the cellphones or indirectly on the 3DS... and Im sure that also on cellphones people will be willing to pay more for a more complete experience...
and no one says they shouldn't stick to what they do best... to make great games they don't have to start making their own cellphone... just bring what they do best to a new platform...
