The Official Music Thread

Post by skeezer on Sun Jun 14, 2009 6:33 pm

So apparently most of us listen to music, even though I am sure most of us have our own music tastes I think it'd be a great idea to have this thread.

Reason for this thread you ask?

Well this can be a thread where we can all share music and recommend song/artists/albums. We will most likely also debate over music as well Wink

Great idea (of course, because I suggested it Razz)

As everyone knows, I'm a big fan of classic rock, my favourites being The Beatles and Pink Floyd. You can check my favourite artists and albums here

I'm looking for new progressive rock albums (and bands) I haven't listened to, so any suggestion would be very welcome. Other classic rock albums would be appreciated too

For some classic rock:

Are you familiar with Vanilla Fudge? They were absolute monsters, but I think they're really underappreciated nowadays. I'd recommend their first album, eponymously titled Vanilla Fudge, if you're interested in listening to their stuff.

Also, this comes as a surprise to many people, but before Chicago became a namby-pamby sissy ballad band, they actually used to rock. That's right, they were originally called Chicago Transit Authority, and their first two albums--in my opinion--were two of the greatest albums of all time.

The audio quality is terrible on the second video, but you can still get an idea of how awesome they were. It's still a thrill to see Peter Cetera before he started to suck. Smile

Mel Torme, anybody?

In this video, Mel gives a jaw-dropping performance on The Merv Griffin Show. Also in the vid is Buddy Rich, the greatest drummer in the entire history of the Universe (but that's for another post). There's some equipment malfunction with Buddy's drum kit toward the end of the song, but Mel is in top form nonetheless.

Here, he performs two songs with British pianist George Shearing. My favorite part is Mel's scatting when Shearing plays the J.S. Bach fugue.

The second piece in the vid is a stunning, beautiful rendition of Stardust.

Woohoo music thread. I'm mostly into progressive rock/metal/etc. If you haven't heard of it, it's great stuff, but can be a little more complex and hard to get into, somewhat like classical music.
Liquid Tension Experiment:
Spoiler:

Ayreon (the human equation is probably my favorite album for the moment and has been for a while)
Spoiler:

Some more straightforward heavy stuff thrown in for good measure:

The Who - We're Not Gonna Take It

I also play the sax (and, by extension, the flute). I'm mainly a keyboard player these days, but I got my start playing the sax.

As far as instrumental music, is anybody into straight-ahead jazz?

I think I am going to delete Mario's posts... FAR too long and take too much computer to load.

PLEASE!!! NO MORE THAN 3 VIDEOS IN A POST! AND NO MULTI-POSTS TO ADD LOTS OF VIDEOS!

On a side note, I also at one time played the sax... though I gave it up within a year. A few things went into that decision, some were money issues at the time.

Also, I like Jazz music. Smile

I can't improvise on a keyboard or harmonica to save my life so i fail at jazz. Most i can do is some blues on the guitar. I wish i had the time to take some instrument classes

My father used to play sax when he was young, but didn't went through with it

We could use spoiler tags for the videos. Like
Spoiler:
this?

Haha looks like it works!

Also, when did you play sax? earlier or later on in life? I started when I was 11, so it's been a part of my life for a good long while Cool unfortunately though i may have to put it aside for the next 3 years due to school.

@Alasted: at first i was really confused how flute can be an "extension" of the sax, but I guess they are pretty similar if you compare them to stringed instruments, keyboards, etc. rabbit

They are very similar indeed. The fingering systems are nearly the same, so it's relatively easy to learn the flute if you can play the sax; the biggest difference is the mouthpiece.

In most big bands, sax players are required to double on the flute. (Also, the clarinet. But I've never been able to get the hang of the clarinet--which is one of the many reasons I'm not a big band saxophonist. Laughing)

Well, interesting. I once started to learn the flute but had to put it down because, well, i should buy my own flute Razz. I was thinking into getting an ocarina as people say they are similar as well

Re: The Official Music Thread

Post by Alasted on Fri Jun 19, 2009 8:59 pm

My father took me to Vegas about five or six years ago. During the week that we were in Vegas, Neil Sedaka and Paul Anka were each performing on the same night at different venues. I told him that I'd rather see Neil Sedaka, so we reserved tickets for that show.

Come the night of the show, my dad and I drive to the Orleans casino, only to learn that the Sedaka concert has been canceled (he had the flu or something). We then rush to the MGM Grand to buy some last-minute tickets to the Paul Anka concert.

Of course, I'm not a happy camper. At this point, I'm thinking, "Great, we're gonna sit through two hours of 'Put Your Head on My Shoulder' and that Kodak song."

I learned something that night; things like this happen for a reason. The concert I saw that night was perhaps the most amazing performance I've seen in my entire life. Paul Anka just blew me away as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer.

He did a song in tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr., which I've been trying to find for a while. I've only recently come across a video of that number, and I'd like to share it with you all. The video is from the 2005 Montreal Jazz Fesival, but the performance is pretty much how I remember it from that night in Vegas.
