Bioware Austin

I'm not sure if I told you guys but I have been in Austin since early Friday. I have been looking into moving here and have seen over 50 apartments/rental houses in Austin and San Antonio. So thats where I have been.

Anyways I applied to about 30 game companies/3d studios. Today I went and visited some of them.

1st rant - Every place I went said the same thing, "Did you apply online?" I can not stand this dehumanized world we live in. I mean some of these place only had maybe 12 employees. Seriously human communication is important.

2nd rant - HR (Human Resources) OK so I only ran into this at Bioware but it was annoying, I walk and get the usual "apply online nonesense" and manage to get to a HR rep I talk to her a little and she tells me about what there hiring and what to do. Well I have some question because I after playing Mass Effect I couldn't help but notice that I know how to make terrains quickly better then 90% of what was in Mass Effect. There is a way of doing this quickly that uses fractals and a program few game companies know about because it more an advertising/film tool but works great in this senerio. Anyways I start asking her about the programs the company use and about what I said here, but She KNOWS NOTHING about what programs they use and tells me the director is in a meeting but "IF I GO ONLINE THERE A COMMENTS SECTION?" WHY do HR people never know anything about the company they work for.

3rd rant LOCK YOUR DOORS, so a few places I hit during lunch and the office was left open with no one there. At Arkane studios I walked around the entire office and everything was exposed. Bioware the first time was also open though one hallway was locked.

Probably one of the most shocking things was how small all these game studios are even bioware was relativly small, all in office complexes. I guess growing up around engineers or maybe just being around the film side of 3D I'm used to seeing entire buildings built and used by one company. Hell even the small Tri-D studio I worked for had its own building. Also I'll give anyone who can find the address of Retro Studios a cookie.

Hey, at the very least it sounds exciting. New city, new place to live, exploring dev offices... I mean, that last one has got to be a scenario in many a gamer's dreams.

I've always imagined game studios to have tight security to keep their projects safe and content on track for timed media coverage with no leakage. lol, shame you didn't get a chance to look inside Bioware Austin for some Old Republic goodness!

Anyhow, I've heard a lot of good things about Texas, save the heat. I wish ya luck in your job/pad search! Hopefully you can find some good, living, breathing meatbags to speak with about your skills! (kotor reference for those not in the know)

Also when I went to Junction Point studios (Disney owned) I couldn't help but notice that they appeared to be reverse engineering Mario Galaxy.

Disney wants the graphics secrets to Mario Galaxy?! or is it just the plumber and his moveset... >.> Pixar can't be in that much trouble that it needs to steal from Ninty, can it?

What? No way! Disney doesn't deserve it, their movies have been crap. If it wasn't for Pixar they would really suck.

Thanks I couldn't find their address on google or any of the game company list for Austin.

^^ I googled "address of retro studios" and found it within the first page of results... sorry but I had to write a email to every game developer in the wold telling them you can´t even use google...

While I may have over looked that I know for sure it was not on google maps 3 days ago though it is there now which is very odd. Thats where I got the other addresses mostly if it wasn't on their site.

Hey Kenzo, when you are getting back? and when are you moving to Austin?

Well just got home a few day ago, and its good to be back. I missed the palm trees.

As for moving, well that is all TBD.

Ahh ok, well when you get the chance for some free time at night, let us know. We started playing UT2004 again. Only we aren't playing Deathmatch, we are playing Assault, Onslaught, and soon Bombing Run (maybe a bit of CTF...). You should join in if hamachi is going to work.
