When do you think regular TV will die?
Now when I mean regular I mean TV that is distributed to you by a host like Dish, direct TV, or any Cable Company.
Digital Distribution would most likely come in the near future replacing those cable companies. We would probably have the ability to download any show any episode at any time. ( would most likely depend if there are packages on whoever would be most likely be doing that. )
There would be no more waiting for a show to appear and VCR recordings ( who uses that nowadays? ) and DVR's would probably go extinct as well. Downloading an episode whether it aired just last week or something that aired a while back like the classics would be something that would happen.
Since internet is growing rapidly. We could have some kind of cable box to connect to the internet and download the episodes from there. We are already seeing it on some spots like Netflix already letting you download movies on your PC. Won't be long now till a TV box is invented for that and now the TV is going to do like that.
Look for the show
Download it
Watch and there!
It happened to the Telephone in just about 10 years. in the 90's Everyone used the telephone that are hooked on walls. and 10 years later Cell phones grew on a massive scale. Some may have even replaced their phones with cell phones and even some more for computers. o_O TV is next!
So are you saying in less then 5 years? somewhere in the late 2010's? or will the poor economy and the troubles of the world will push it to later dates like the 2020's?

Pichu ... right now... it is a pipe dream. We need a better "virtual highway" for the data to travel. right now everything in USA cannot hope be be upgraded in time for even 2015. It takes time to lay new fiber-optic cable, and that is expensive too for the level you are talking about.
Now can we watch shows on the internet? You betcha. We can now. but, that doesn't mean it is in any position to replace TV signal providers....

Well they are taking the first step in the US by getting rid of the "air" signals can't get channel signals with antennas anymore . But its still probably a long long long long long way to go. I still don't have an HDTV either. So until I do it won't happen .

Okay, what if it doesn't need that fiber optic cable components things and just simply need online? From there you can download any shows from any year in just a few seconds and there, it's on your TV stored in a special cable box where its stored and ready to be watched. Of course there will be one company that will start doing this. Netflix has probably done it already on the PC and maybe soon some other may invent the TV box that stores downloadable episodes and have premium packages on what you can download and stuff and lets you keep the shows that air "live". Then that will be a huge success and you will see the others do the same and that's the downfall of regular cable TV.

It could be too slow to download something like that without fiber optic

Two words "Quantum communication" one day there will be a major break through we don't know when that day will come but when it does a few years later it will be a way of life. The amount of data transfer potential there is mind bagoling. Just think to talk to some one on mars it takes 45 minutes at the speed of light, with quantum communication it could be instent.
My prediction is the the internet as we know it will never fully develope to the full potential here in the USA as it will be replaced with a much better technology such as quantum cummunication

Quantum communication sounds like fun. Hopefully they implement it before we die. >_>
